The painting is 132 m long, 20.5 m high, 42 m in diameter, 6 m in embossed part, and the total painting area of over 3,200 m 2. The painting is devided into four layouts: The section of the whole people going out to battle the section of grandiore prelude the section of historical confrontation and the section of victory. Nguyen Van Mac and his accoiates spent more than 1,200 days, of which more than 500 days of sketching and more than 750 days of official drawing in Dien Bien. Its victory on led to the signing of the 1954 Geneva Accords in which France agreed to withdraw its forces from its colonies in Indochina. The Dien Bien Phu Campaign lasted from March to May 1954 under the command of General Vo Nguyen Giap. Nguyen Van Mac, director of the cultural heritage preservation company and a manager of the art project, said it aims to convey an image of a people’s war. Most of the participating painters are young graduates from the Vietnam University of Fine Art. The painting was done with about 30 painters drawing continuously. A massive painting of 132m wide and 9m high that took three years to be completed – was approved by an art council on May 4.
